Sigurdur Olafsson

Sigurdur Olafsson

Painter Icelandic, Born 1958

Sigurdur Olafsson is a contemporary artist best known for his abstract paintings created with unconventional tools. Whilst abstract in conception, his art is often inspired by the colours, rhythms, and seasons of the Icelandic landscape. Interested in the transcendent potential of painting, Olafsson employs the medium to explore the physical properties of paint and innovative possibilities in its use. His process is a paradox; it reconciles artistry with randomness, discipline with chance. Characterized by austere compositions built on layers of hidden complexity, Olafsson’s paintings elegantly negotiate the boundary between order and chaos, the concrete and the metaphysical. His work has been exhibited in the United Kingdom, United States and Europe.
